Full Story in Hickory Daily Record but the thing that most got me is this..... Please read story and comments if you have time.
"We have been dealing with this woman for quite some time," said Boyd. He said a variety of horse-related complaints have been made against in the past two years. She's been warned and her behav-ior has been monitored.
How is it that this person was being monitored for quiet sometime and they found dead horses lots of dead horses and three almost starved to death. It also sounds like there were many many complaints that no one did anything about. SHAME SHAME SHAME on you Mayor, Sheriffs office, Animal Control, & the people leasing the land to her and I am sure the list could be longer. Everything fell through the cracks. Heads need to roll for this I am sooo mad that nothing will happen to her. I never want this to happen again in this county someone needs to take responsibilty and accountablity for what happened and how it got so far.

| Sadly this seems to happen all the time. You report and report and report and nothing gets done and you just get so frustrated that sometimes you just stop reporting. I've had that happen way too many times in my little rural county. |

Just finished reading the article and all the comments.
Looks like she is another wacko hiding behind the word "rescue". Rescues need to be registered, licensed, inspected and monitored and if you are not then you cannot be one! People like this make rescue a dirty word! |

| That is just so sad. To many people are trying to get into the rescue business when they can't even care for their own selves. |

| I agree with your comments paintpower and Buckaboo. I would like to add that this is another sad, sad story that i have heard too often and know too well. There are "rescues" right here under our noses that should not be "rescues" and it is unfortunate that nothing is done until it is too late. |

When I used to work in mental health, I saw too much of this. Pets are loved/hoarded, but not necessarily fed or trained correctly. This is commonly seen with cats and dogs. There is no real understanding of the animal's needs or wants, only what the owner decides they need or want. This is sad, both for the animal and for the very sick human. This is so common it's used in diagnosing patients. It goes the other direction, too. People use animals to show their own power, their invincibility. The animals are pitifully submissive, and even the best rescue can't take away those memories. God bless them all. Please do all you can to help the helpless, both human and animal. |

Well, after reading a lot of the newest comments in the article it appears that she was just using "rescue" as an "excuse" why her horses were looking so bad.
Turns out she was running a business ... boarding, training, lessons, some suggestion she was even working with the local 4H clubs.
People had been complaining to authorities for a long time. I saw one person who said they started complaining in 2004 !!
She was no hoarder and she was no rescue .... I question why she got away with this for so long. She wouldn't even bury the dead horses after she was told to do it. The city had to come out and bury them. |

Just had this happen in Yancey County too. One dead in the barn and the others were so weak that when a bystander brought a roll of hay the others were too weak to even get to it. FINALLY though we now have a new investigator and he took no time in going in and getting the horses the minute he got the word. The rest are now being cared for along with 16 dogs and her 2 yr old that was in teh same condition as the animals. It was on wlos.com All of these people need to be serving justice though I just dont know if there is a true justice for what these people do!!!! |

| There is no justice brought forward in these cases. These rescue organizations are against a wall, until our judicial system gets some one brave enough to inflict judgement on these people. Monetary punishment will not /has not worked, they must serve time away from family, job for a certain amount of time. If the judge takes away their lively hood for about 6 months( first offense) you would see this problem come to a halt. Sad thing is the same treatment is often inflicted on children and nothing is done about that either. Sounds to me like whoever was investigating this case, if they did not see a problem before all these horses died, they obviously don't need to be investigators:( quote- dealing with this woman for quite some time)this means there had been an issue way before horses died, somebody dropped the ball here. |

| Sounds like another sad ,sick story, Lots of failures on many peoples part. Can't say that I agree with monitering ,etc etc of rescues . Legit rescues aren't causing these problems. No need to take more time and energy away from actual horse care. Fools and abusers will continue as they will. Some excellant rescues are being discouraged due to scurrilous internet gossip increasing demands of their services. |

There are many many people with psychiatric illnesses who do not receive treatment. It would require time and money to dedicate enough professionals to help those needing it. We don't support psychiatric services. So,the helpless (typically children and/or animals) suffer, as well as the sick adult. This is a topic I've gone on about many times, but it's useless. People and animals will continue to suffer/die until we pay professionals for their work. It takes a village. Heavy sigh. Help, as you can, please. |
