| How tragic for both horses and human... |
Then there was the bridle. Billy explained how to use a stick of licorice for a bit until Galiban was used to having something in his mouth. Billy explained, "Of course we could force him to everything, but he wouldn't be as good a horse if we did. He'd always be a bit afraid, and he wouldn't mind because he wanted to." He must have been a very sad, depressed individual... I hope we don't find out there were family who could have helped both he and the animals. Sad, so very sad indeed. |

| Anyone know what rescue the surviving horses were taken too? I would like to make a contribution to their care. I think they said it was in Jacksonville? I just moved here a couple years ago, so I don't know the different rescues. THANKS! |

They showed pictures last night and I have NEVER seen anything so horrible! They have stopped showing the worst of the pictures...thank goodness.
I do know the horses are being kept at TLC farm here in Richlands, just down the road from us. Timmy Thomas has them under his care. Yeah, Timmy! |

This is such a sad story. It concerns me that a deputy was supposed to have checked this on Friday and said there was nothing wrong. Those horses didn't go from fine shape to dead in 3 days. Something doesn't add up. And they've known there was a problem for months and nothing was done. These horses would have been better off humanely euthanized than having to go through what they went through.
Do these deputies not have some sort of check sheet to know what they are looking for? I've seen several comments on WRAL under this article from law enforcement who say they wouldn't have a clue what to check and I've heard this more than once from different counties. My goodness, I could have told that was a serious situation when I was 10 years old!
And the article mentioned that U.S. Humane Society was there last summer. Was it HSUS? If so, I wonder why there was no follow-ups made. |

| Based on my experience, there isn't a strong animal control in Duplin and it is even less so for large animals. |

| From the article there were numerous complaints for MONTHS about these horses. What a terrible shame for both the horses and the owner who clearly was in mental distress... |

OK, I understand that the depuies had limited training om what to look for. But ya know it's not rocket science to go out there and make sure the horses at least had water!!! This is just so horribble, I am at a lost for words. Those horses didn't get that bad off in a couple of days or even a couple of months.....
I read somewhere that he found out that he had cancer on friday..... but still, this abuse has been going on a LONG time... He made a choice to end HIS life, the horses didn't get a choice! |

| Tragic story. Local law enforcement seems undertrained and possibly not motivated or at least powerless to correct the problem. The dead renter must have had phyco issues and neighbors possibly watched 13 horses die. It seems like actions could have occured sooner to prevent this loss. I watched the video clip - yuck. How many horse were still living? |

| I still want to know what "humane society" was there last summer and then did no follow-ups. Without doing follow-ups they may as well have never gone there in the first place. |

it is such a small world. i took my husband to the heart doc today. in waiting ( you can tell i have horses-- i dont dress up for such occassions ) this elderly lady struck up a conversation with me about horses. ( she is NOT a horse person). her family's property boarders some of the property in the duplin county horse case. her granddaughter had told a ( woman sheriff) that mare and foal were sick and looked horrible. the outsiders ( once any law enforcement had been notified ) was not even allowed to go and fill water tanks ( troughs). mare died and fell on foal. her husband had an early appointment at wake med heart center because HE was in such disarray about the situation. the woman was teary and sad. she questioned ME how law enforcement could be so sloppy at the investigation and follow up. i answered her --- " i am not sure what all the facts are in this particular case... sometimes law enforcement do not know proper protocol for equine or what they need to be looking for or have had training. she was mad ( not mad mad at me but seemingly disappointed in my answer)she says it does not take education to give horses or dogs WATER. So here is my question to us -( just wondering out loud here) WHAT does it take to educate law enforcement OR animal enforcement about animals ( especially horses here) safety, neglect, ect.? Would this be something as horse owners/enthusiast we could go and volunteer to help aid in education - ( and that i mean basic care and what to really look for when doing an investigation). I have been in another state where an investigation went to see about horse neglect. nothing was done because they SAW water and SAW hay. doesnt mean they were being fed... another time... the gal ( and this person is a true hoarder and what a mess she has) got a clear bill because her husband was rubbing elbows with the powers to be. One time ( I was in real estate for a short time) i showed this horse property to a client ( and i had NOT previewed it) was the worst i had EVER seen in my life. this guy was well to do and his place and his horses were a mess. the stalls had been chewed thru . i could duck and enter the barn form the outside of the stalls --- because of my "oath" i cold not report it... but said client sure did. every day until it was finally was on the news and still nothing done about the horses. I could go on and on.... just seems like maybe law enforcement or the powers to be need help/ or a good swift kick in the bum. |

One statement in an interview made by a law enforcement Officer did state "did not see anything in plain view" in regards to the last visit. I do have to say...from articles I have read and saw horses were dead in the woods and covered up and in the barns.
When it comes to investigating when it comes to search and seizure..."plain view" is a key word. You cannot just go walking through barns and fences without a warrant unless you have consent. So it's feasible that the deputy did not see them. The landowner specifically said in his interview "dead horses in the woods". Does not sound like they were laying in the driveway.
It was also indicated that on previous visits horses were noted "underweight" but in good health. There may indeed be an issue with follow up.
But since the owner id now deceased we can never really know WHY there was feed and hay on the premises, but it was not being fed. There's a lot of information that will remain unknown in this case. |
It amazed me that people want the "perfect" horse, but won't work to become the "perfect" rider! |

I met this man years ago on a trailride and through mutual friends got to know him a bit. Long story short, he shouldn't have had horses then, and it seems that hadn't changed in all these years. He was a very troubled man, even back then. However, it is still a very sad situation all the way around.
The pictures were heartbreaking and I have never seen anything so horrific. The water trough one got to me the most!
If anyone would like contact info so they can make donations...I am calling Timmy tomorrow so I can drop off some feed. I will ask him what specifically he needs and see if it is ok to give out his number. Just PM me or check back here. Hope that is ok mods?

i was there. i can tell you first hand & i took lots of pics before everyone got to the scene. if you would like to see them check tammy powell-worrells facebook page. my uncle use to live in this house where the man lived. he & his wife sold it & when my grandmother died the land beside it was left to him. he use to own horses over there himself. when riding by there one day he saw horses on his property so he stopped to see why they were there. anyway it took a while for him to get the horses off of his property. the last couple of months when checking on the property he had noticed horses not looking very well. he has made several complaints as well as other passerbys and neighborhood people. fri he made another and nothing. sat someone told him that there were at least 6 dead horses on his side of the property. so that sunday he went to see. he counted 13 all together. then he called some of the family and the sher. dept. the ones on his land had been there a while. some were smelling awlful and had been eaten by predators. one had been covered up with pine limbs. these limbs had been cut if you notice on the pics, they were cut not broken off as if maybe by the recent ice. they were far enough off of the road in some small pines that you could not see them without walking back there. there was a small- looked like maybe a yearling paint that could have been seen from the road behind the mans barn. this horse could not be seen from the road though because it had a large white crate like you would see cucumbers on an 18 wheeler in. this was laying on the back end of the horse. then a bucket had been placed on the horses head then another beside that and then a 50 gal barrel rolled to cover the rest. there was 1 baby dead inside a stall. there was a mare, baby, and 2 more hudddled up that look like maybe they froze - they were at the end of the barn beside the water bucket - sitting up almost. you couldnt see them from the road either. there was 1 horse in the horse trailer parked in the yard ???? the trailer was not hooked up to the truck ??????? there were at least 4 - 5 round bales of hay in the barn and also a freezer with feed in it --- just no one to give it to them. 1 horse was lying dead between the hay and freezer -- probably no water. the horses that survived were all standing under shelter with access to hay. the ones that were lying out dead had nothing. my uncle noticed 1 particular sorrel baby out that friday. this one made him call. this horse was lying out in the mud dead sunday. the 3.5 inches of rain and cold that night probably finished this one off. it could have been saved if someone had done something friday. since all of this has happened i have heard some things about the person. some of my family was there monday and talked with his dad. he had some health issues - he needed a liver transplant and then also recently found out that he had pancreatic cancer. this is no excuse but i guess maybe he went into a depression and just did not care. it is no excuse but i know when he first moved there he had some pretty nice horses as well as well bred horses. i know it is still no excuse but i guess there is no telling what something like that could drive you to do. i have also heard of some legal issues as well -- anyway when tlc farms came to get the survivors we took some in our trailer for them since they didnt have enough room in the trailer. there were 3 yearling size and 4 adult horse --- you will all be happy to know that when they were unloaded they all took off running so happy! it was a great feeling to see them run after everything that had gone on that day. |

| it's ashame that duplin co does not have an equine rescue - maybe this will help get the ball rolling. the sherrif contacted my husband today to see if he would be willing to help transport rescue horses to a facility if it should ever come up again. i know of several people that have expressed interest in horse rescue. we would love to but aren't able due to not having a large enough area for this. but maybe we can all figure out something. |

| I just talked with Timmie -- he ask that any donations be made to the Duplin County Humane Society to help with the cost of the horses -- he is working with Duplin County personnel to help set up a program like the one he works with in Onslow County, its a sad situation but maybe some good will come of this. |
